Learning how to properly taste and value tequila is not as easy as it seems. If you only interact with tequila in bars, nightclubs, or lounges (when it is served by patrons as a chaser)then it's likely you have tasted blanco tequila so far. This variety is clear and hardly undergoes an aging process to refine its taste. Many people are introduced to tequila this way and are yet to indulge in the best tequila

We can confidently state that it takes tasting reposado tequila to know what you’ve been missing. The tequila is flavourful and easier on your palate than Blanco tequila.

In regard to aging, tequila blanco is hardly considered aged tequila at all, since it doesn’t age more than 60 days. Hence, the clear transparent, colour and sharp “bite”. On the other hand, reposado tequila is aged for 2 to 11 months in a barrel, giving it a smoother taste and warm flavour profiles great for cocktail recipes.

Brief History/Background

Reposado tequila dates back to the 1860s. Its existence is credited to Feliciano Romo - founder of Tequila Herradura, a renowned tequila distillery in Jalisco Mexico. This happens to be the first-ever distillery to make reposado tequila.

Reposado tequila is a mezcal (a name reserved for spirits from the succulent agave plant native to Mexico). Like all types of tequila, it is made from one specific agave variety (blue Weber agave). It is also made in Mexico, consequently meeting the legal threshold for being labeled as tequila.

How is Reposado Tequila Made?

It all starts with farming the blue agave plant, which takes six years to mature. The agave is then harvested, and its core (which resembles a giant pineapple when the leaves are cut) is cooked in an oven before being fermented, distilled, and aged.

Once the core is cooked, it is shredded to make a juice (or "mosto") which is mixed with water and yeast before being fermented in steel tanks. This mixture creates alcohol.

Like other spirits, tequila goes through a distillation process two or more times to purify and concentrate it. As mentioned, reposado tequila is aged for 2-11 months to give it flavour and a smooth finish. The aging gives the tequila a colour profile ranging from nearly clear color to light honey or a rich amber.

Most Popular Reposado Tequila Brands

While tastes and preferences vary in regard to reposado tequila and any other type of tequila or spirits, there are some reposado brands that are generally preferred.

  • Roca Patron is one of those brands. With a pale golden colour, and complex sweetness, coupled with spicy sweet notes that continue through a long-lasting finish.
  • Mijenta Tequila Reposado is another popular reposado tequila brand renowned for careful crafting and social responsibility initiatives. Mijenta ages for approximately six months in French oak barrels, American oak barrels, or French acacia casks to achieve a softer taste best enjoyed neat.
  • Fortaleza Reposado is another popular reposado tequila with a balanced but unique taste, featuring citrus notes coupled with hints of butter, caramel, and cooked agave. The tequila has a delicately spicy, long, and rich finish, enjoyable to both beginners and seasoned tequila drinkers.

How to Enjoy Reposado Tequila

If you are eager to get the best out of reposado tequila, we’ve suggested three main ways to enjoy it. We recommend the following;

1. Taking It Neat

Reposado is aged to refine its taste. Many tequila experts say it is aged perfectly, aged but not too long to make it overly decadent. This makes it great when taken neat without any garnishes or additives. However, this method isn't for everyone and luckily there are other ways of enjoying reposado tequila while still appreciating its natural flavour.

2. Cocktails

The smoother taste and warm flavour profile make reposado tequila a great choice for cocktail recipes. You are bound to enjoy most, if not all cocktails featuring reposado tequila alongside some lime wedges, hints of fruit, and herbs.

3. Liquor Replacement

You can also consider reposado instead of liquor (all alcohol made by distilling grain, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have undergone alcohol fermentation).

4. Pair with Food

Like wine, reposado tequila can be paired with meals. It pairs perfectly with Mexican staples like meaty tacos or steak. Seafood can also be a great complement to this type of tequila, especially if they carry a tangier or more citrus flavour, such as being infused with fresh lime juice or habanero, to create a mouthwatering balance of flavors. The same applies to vegetables like asparagus and tomatillos among a wide range of options.

If you love exploring as we do, we invite you to think outside the box and come up with your own pairings for reposado tequila. If you don't know where to start, keep in mind: when taken in cocktails containing appetizer ingredients like aperol, reposado tequila is great as an appetizer before a delicious meal.
